The 75 Quilts for 75 Beds project
It’s not everyday that an entire community of crafters gifts their work to an aged care home. The soon-to-be-completed Embracia in Woodford will be the home of the lucky recipients of the handcrafted quilts when it opens in early 2015.
The 2014 Woodford Show showcased the awarded work of the local crafters over the weekend of 20th and 21st June at the Woodford Showgrounds.
The local community combined their talents to contribute to the wellbeing of their aged community with the 75 Quilts for 75 Beds project. Each resident of the home will be gifted with a handcrafted rug – either quilted, crocheted, knitted or sewn– when they move in to the 75-bed home.
We met with project coordinator, Rhonda Affoo. “It’s just something we do for each other in this rural community of Woodford and Kilcoy. A large portion of the yarn has been donated from various areas to our groups of crafters, who then create the blankets that we distribute.”
Rhonda’s collaborations with local crafters has seen many recipients in the 26 years since she moved to the area . “Our area has an ageing population with quite a few female residents are housebound. So being part of this, and similar, projects is one way they are keeping connected to their community and also keeping the craft alive. Embracia in Woodford residents will feel the ‘Woodford Warmth’, experiencing first-hand the value of being part of the community.
